Verily, all praise is for Allah. We praise Him, we seek His assistance and we ask for His forgiveness. And we seek refuge in Him from the evils of our selves. Whoever Allah guides, none can misguide. Whoever He misguides, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.
Al Imran 102 : O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam.
Oh people:
All praise is due to Allah. He created His servants and provided them sustenance and sufficed them. And ordained for them a religion to rightly set their affairs. And warned them of the causes of misery. We praise Him and are grateful to Him For He is the most deserving of gratitude. He has luminous wisdom in His Divine Law.
Al Baqarah (2) 138: [And say, “Ours is] the religion of Allah. And who is better than Allah in [ordaining] religion? And we are worshippers of Him.”
Be conscious of Allah Almighty and obey Him. And take from your health for times of sickness. And from your leisure time for time of business. And from your life for your death. For the days pass by you to your graves. And you will not have except what you put forth.
Az-Zalzala (99) 7-8: (7) So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, (8) And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.
Oh people:
Whoever reads the Quranic and Sunnah texts related to the five pillars of Islam, realizes their importance to people’s lives and wealth. For Islam was built upon them. And it is proof of the servant surrendering to their Lord Almighty. And the previous Divine Laws came with them. And their completion and perfection was in the shariah of Mohammad ﷺ.
And Zakat is one of the pillars of Islam. And it is linked with prayer in the Quran. Allah Almighty warned those not offering it that they will be tormented through the wealth that they amass. And Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) fought those who withheld it. Through their refusal to pay it, he made their lives and wealth lawful. And the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) concurred with him in this regard. And from among the most important virtues of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) is him fighting the apostates and those withholding zakat. And what he said became well known throughout the world:
“By Allah, I will surely fight those who differentiate between prayer and Zakah, for Zakah is what is due on wealth. By Allah, if they withhold from me a small she-goat that they used to give to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) I will fight them for withholding it.” [al-Bukhari 7284, Muslim 20]
And Allah did not ordain the Zakat except for people’s benefit. Otherwise, for He the Glorified is no need for them and their wealth. He obligated it to realize benefits for them. And to repel and remove harm, trials and punishments from them. And to send down blessings upon them. So that the group whose members pay the zakat on their wealth enjoy the love of Allah Almighty and His pleasure. For following His religion and ordainments. Just as Allah’s wrath and vengeance is released on the group whose individuals withhold the zakat on their wealth. And it came in the Hadith:
They do not withhold the Zakah of their wealth, but rain will be withheld from the sky, and were it not for the animals, no rain would fall on them. [Ibn Majah 4019]
Offering Zakat is a purification for the community. And purification and growing their wealth. And blessings follows it for performing this pillar of Islam.
At-Tawbah (9) 103: Take, from their wealth a charity to purify them and sanctify them with it
And if every person purified and blessed his wealth through offering Zakat the blessings would encompass all the people. And their sustenance would suffice them. And hunger, poverty and fear would be lifted from them. And Allah promised compensating those spending for what they spent:
Saba (34) 39: But whatever thing you spend [in His cause] – He will compensate it; and He is the best of providers.
And if blessing is placed in something it multiplies by permission of Allah Almighty even if it seems like a little to the people. And if the blessing is removed it is wiped out even it seems like a lot to the people. And how much are people in need these days for the blessing in their sustenance and wealth that is not enough for them.
Removing the rights of Allah from the wealth, whether obligatory or supererogatory, is the greatest way to bless it. And our Prophet Mohammad ﷺ informed us saying:
Charity does not diminish wealth. [Muslim 2588]
And from the most important means of establishing security and removing fear and combatting crime is offering Zakat. Because it closes the gap between the poor and the wealthy. And it leads to affinity and affection between them. And it cleanses the hearts of the poor from animosity and grudges against the wealthy. And many of the revolutions in the human history were ignited by poverty and hunger.
And most crimes of theft, looting, burglary, banditry, fraud and forgery were, for the most part, committed initially out of need until criminality was embedded in the souls.
And the moral crimes such as fornication and others take place initially due to poverty and hunger. Until the people performing it become accustomed to it and it becomes their occupation. And the Zakat closes this wide door of crimes and corruption if the people of wealth offer it as Allah Almighty commanded them. But greediness of the soul overcomes them and others. But if fear descends on a people it encompasses the poor and the rich.
And in giving the zakat is spreading good morals, compassion and solidarity between individuals in a society. They feel the needs of one another. In contrast to the materialistic societies in which the individual only cares about himself and his business even if the rest of the people perished. And the compassionate society is promised the mercy of Allah Almighty as the Prophet ﷺ said:
Indeed Allah has mercy on His compassionate servants. [al-Bukhari 5655, Muslim 923]
I say what you have heard and I seek forgiveness from Allah for me and you from every sin. So seek forgives from Him, Verily He is Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
Second Khutbah
All praise is to Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.
Oh Muslims:
And the zakat is a cause for purifying the hearts of the poor and the needy from grudges against the rich. And from envy for what Allah has given them from His Grace. If they see that the wealthy feel for them, share in their affliction, sense their needs and console them with their wealth. And if the poor knew that they have a share in the wealth of the wealthy that Allah obligated for them and the rich performed what they were obliged to do, then the poor would wish that the wealth of the wealthy would increase. And they would be joyous for the profits in their businesses. And they would supplicate for them in this regard. And ask that their wealth be blessed. And they would not wish for it to diminish or dissipate. For their knowledge that their right of zakat would increase with an increase in the capital and profits of the wealthy.
And it has been proven that victory and sustenance are brought by the poor and the vulnerable. And that is through the blessing of their righteousness. As was related in the Hadith of Musa3b bin Sa3d bin Abee Waqqaas (may Allah be pleased with them) who said:
Sa`d (bin Abi Waqqas) saw himself better than those less fortunate than him. So the Prophet ﷺ said, “Are you not helped and provided for except though your vulnerable.”
And regardless of what means and ways that humans take and what research, studies and workshops are held to bring the poor and wealthy closer and unite their hearts, they will not find anything like the zakat for that. How perfect is the One who ordained, commanded and decreed!!
I conclude with this and send prayers of blessings and peace upon your Prophet as your Lord commanded:
Al Ahzaab (33) 56: Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [ Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [ Allah to grant him] peace.
O Allah, guide us with those whom You have guided, grant us well-being among those You have granted well-being, be an ally to us along with those whom You are an ally to, and bless what You have bestowed upon us, and save us from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily You decree and none can decree over You. He whom You support can never be humiliated. Glory is to You, our Lord, You are Blessed and Exalted.
O Allah, We ask You for all that is good, in this world and in the Hereafter, what we know and what we do not know. O Allah, we seek refuge with You from all evil, in this world and in the Hereafter, what we know and what we do not know. O Allah, we ask You for the good that Your servant and Prophet has asked You for, and we seek refuge with You from the evil from which Your servant and Prophet sought refuge. O Allah, we ask You for Paradise and for that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed, and we seek refuge in You from Hell and from that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed. And we ask You to make every decree that You decree concerning us good
Servants of Allah. Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
Remember Allah, the Great – He will remember you. Thank Him for His favors – He will increase you therein. And seek forgiveness from Him – He will forgive you. And be conscious of Him – He will provide you a way out of difficult matters. And, establish the prayer.
