Verily, all praise is for Allah. We praise Him, we seek His assistance and we ask for His forgiveness. And we seek refuge in Him from the evils of our selves. Whoever Allah guides, none can misguide. Whoever He misguides, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.
Al Imran 102 : O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam.
Oh people:
All praise is due to Allah Who illuminated through the light of His Book the darkness of injustices. And illuminated by the beacons of His guidance the hearts of Arabs and non-Arabs. His knowledge encompasses all beings. Nothing is hidden from Him in the earth or the heavens. He sent his Prophet ﷺ calling to goodness and warning of what harms the religious and worldly affairs. And he left with his ummah two illuminating beacons. And people will remain in good as long as they hold unto them. And the he ﷺ said about them:
Indeed I left with you two matters that you will never be misguided after them as long as you adhere to them or act upon them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah. [Ibn Hazem 2/251]
Be conscious of Allah and seek the Afterlife and beware of becoming from those whom Allah said about them:
Al Mujaadila (58) 19: Satan has overcome them and made them forget the remembrance of Allah. Those are the party of Satan. Unquestionably, the party of Satan – they will be the losers.
Some people are proud of what they have been given of worldly knowledge. Thus, they think that they have reached a status that authorizes them to spread corruption on the earth and do as they please on it. And they do not know that they were given from the knowledge but a little.
And this group of people are the adversaries of the Messengers. Out of arrogance, they do not worship Allah. And they disregard His Shariah. Sufficing with and being proud of what they were given of knowledge.
And the Quran has narrated there condition and what happened to them:
Ghafer 83-85:(83) And when their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they [merely] rejoiced in what they had of knowledge, but they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule. (84) And when they saw Our punishment, they said, “We believe in Allah alone and disbelieve in that which we used to associate with Him.” (85) But never did their faith benefit them once they saw Our punishment. [It is] the established way of Allah which has preceded among His servants. And the disbelievers thereupon lost [all].
And from among the knowledge of the people of falsehood that we were commanded to avoid and renounce its practitioners is the knowledge of magic, sorcery, fortune telling, divination and astrology. And what it encompasses such as claims of knowledge of the unseen. And the claim benefit and harm without Allah Almighty.
And all of this compromises tawhid (Divine Oneness). To the point that it leads its practitioners to disbelief and association with Allah when the magician deals with the satans. And sacrifices for them and worships them. And this is the price they pay for working with them to harm the people. And informing them about people’s news and private matters. Thus, the magician or sorcerer informs the afflicted ones with something from their past and tells them numerous lies about their future. And the ignorant ones end up believing them and think that they know the unseen. And they believe that they bring about benefit and harm without Allah Almighty. And this is shirk (associating others with Allah) in the Lordship.
And as far as going to them and believing in them and acting upon what they say, it is a breach of the Tawhid (Divine oneness). And if a person’s tawhid goes away, what is left for him from his faith?
Sorcery and magic are old afflictions. The previous religious laws all prohibited it. And the Quran informed of its oldness:
Al Baqarah (2) 102: And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Hārūt and Mārūt. But they [i.e., the two angels] do not teach anyone unless they say, “We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].” And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And they [i.e., people] learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But they [i.e., the Children of Israel] certainly knew that whoever purchased it [i.e., magic] would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.
In this verse, Allah refutes the Children of Israel’s assignment of magic and sorcery to the Prophet of Allah – Solomon (peace be upon him) saying: “It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic.”
And this verse stated that magic was found in Babylon. And Ibn Kathir indicated that it is the Babylon in Iraq.
And the one who looks at the history of Babylon finds that the religions of the Sabians and Zoroastrians was prevalent in it and included worshipping the fire to worshipping the stars. And this gives a clear indication of the coupling of magic with disbelief and that there is a foundational relationship between them.
Just as the Arabs in the period of ignorance before Islam had many magicians and soothsayers among them. And so they attempted to use them against the Prophet ﷺ when he came to them with the Quran.
And learning and teaching magic is disbelief in Allah Almighty. Ibn Juraij (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Only the disbeliever attempts magic”. And Ibn Hajer (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “And in the Almighty’s words (We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]) is an indication that learning magic is disbelief. And the Prophet ﷺ counted it as among the seven destructive sins. And included in its prohibition and having or reading books that show how to perform magic. Or conjuring the shaytans. Or watching movies showing magic and how to perform it. Not for criticizing it but rather for learning it and being impressed by it. All of this prohibited.
So be conscious of your Lord Allah. And adhere to your religion. And beware of deficiencies in your Tawhid. Allah says:
Al Baqarah (2) 102-103: (102) But they [i.e., the Children of Israel] certainly knew that whoever purchased it [i.e., magic] would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew. (103) And if they had believed and feared Allah, then the reward from Allah would have been [far] better, if they only knew.
I say what you have heard and I seek forgiveness from Allah for me and you from every sin. So seek forgives from Him, Verily He is Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
Second Khutbah
All praise is to Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.
Oh Muslims:
If a Muslim is afflicted by magic or by harm in general it is necessary for him to be patient and expect the reward from Allah. And to increase his trust and reliance on Allah. And to turn to Him in supplication to remove the harm. For nothing turns way the decree but the supplication. And there is no blame on him for taking the religiously allowable means for treating the magic. And from among them is the ruqyah (Quranic recitation on afflicted person). Allah Almighty says:
Al Isra (17) 82: And We send down of the Qur’ān that which is healing and mercy
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
There is no harm in the ruqyah (Quranic recitation on afflicted person) which does have shirk (association with Allah). [Muslim 2200]
And Allah extends benefit through the ordained ruqyah, whether preventative or as a treatment, if there is certainty of belief, reliance on Allah and if the heart is filled with remembrance of Allah and supplication to Him.
And from the ways of treating magic is exerting effort to find it, remove it and dispel it. And seeking help in that through supplicating to Allah. As was authenticated from the Prophet ﷺ that he asked his Lord when Labeed bin Al A3sam put a spell on him. The mother of the believers Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
The Prophet ﷺ began to imagine that he had done something when he had not. One day, or one night, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) supplicated, and then supplicated again. Then he said: ‘O ‘Aishah, do you know that Allah has instructed me concerning the matter I asked Him about? Then Allah guided him to the place of the spell. [alBukhari and Muslim]
And hijaamah (cupping) can benefit in expelling the spell. Ibn Qayim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Using hijaamah (cupping) on the place harmed by the spell is from the most useful treatments if it is used in the prescribed manner”.
I conclude with this and send prayers of blessings and peace upon your Prophet as your Lord commanded:
Al Ahzaab (33) 56: Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [ Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [ Allah to grant him] peace.
O Allah, guide us with those whom You have guided, grant us well-being among those You have granted well-being, be an ally to us along with those whom You are an ally to, and bless what You have bestowed upon us, and save us from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily You decree and none can decree over You. He whom You support can never be humiliated. Glory is to You, our Lord, You are Blessed and Exalted.
O Allah, We ask You for all that is good, in this world and in the Hereafter, what we know and what we do not know. O Allah, we seek refuge with You from all evil, in this world and in the Hereafter, what we know and what we do not know. O Allah, we ask You for the good that Your servant and Prophet has asked You for, and we seek refuge with You from the evil from which Your servant and Prophet sought refuge. O Allah, we ask You for Paradise and for that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed, and we seek refuge in You from Hell and from that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed. And we ask You to make every decree that You decree concerning us good
Servants of Allah. Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
Remember Allah, the Great – He will remember you. Thank Him for His favors – He will increase you therein. And seek forgiveness from Him – He will forgive you. And be conscious of Him – He will provide you a way out of difficult matters. And, establish the prayer.
